It was a hilly start to the day as we left Waihi Beach behind us and re-joined highway 2. Waihi Beach was a lovely spot and if we were not flying on Thursday I think we would have really liked a day off here. It was 4 miles up hill before we met the main road and after that it was easy riding all day.  The North Island doesn't seem to have any flat areas, today we were lucky enough to find some level ground.

We followed a railway line from Waihi Town which led us to a restored station café which was too good to pass by.  The homemade cakes were also impossible to resist.  We continued along the narrow and winding Karangahaki gorge, a really great ride.

Having left the gorge we came across the town of Peroa, the birthplace of 'Lemon and Peroa’, a spring water drink which the Kiwi’s claim is ‘World Famous in New Zealand’.  We have not had it before so we bought some to accompany our lunch.  We gave it the thumbs up.

Back on the road we were going well until Polly got a puncture.  I did my usual ‘puncture strop’ before calming down and realising that it really wasn’t a problem, we were in no hurry and there was no sign of a group of 50 Indians ready to gather round and prod and stare as we fixed the flat.

The rest of the ride was very straight forward, no hills appeared and after turning off the highway we enjoyed quiet back roads to Miranda.  It was almost too easy and we had to entertain ourselves by mooing at the cows in the hope they would talk back.

Miranda provided yet another quality campsite.  This one also has thermal pools for us to soak our tired muscles in.  Tomorrow is our last day of cycling in New Zealand. We have 50 miles to get to the Auckland suburb of Manakau where hopefully we will find a friendly bike shop to give us two big cardboard bike boxes to pack them up for the trip to California.
