As forecast it rained ALL day today. We got up and packed up early just in case the sky-dive was still on, but it seems it's not a good idea to jump out of a plane when you can’t see anything around/above/below you. We have decided to cycle on for a couple of days and then hire a car and drive back when the weather improves.

Outside the kitchen it was seriously grey and wet as we put the last bits of gear back on the bikes. It was a day for full water-proof clothing and washing up gloves. In weather like this it’s best just to keep on cycling and get the miles done because if you stop for more than 5 minutes you just get freezing cold. We made 30 miles by lunch and sheltered under a tree with cup-a-soups and sandwiches, pretty pleased with our progress.

Unfortunately we were then hit with 10 miles of steady uphill which was a real grind and not very safe in the pouring rain with massive logging trucks whizzing past. They were close enough to strip the bark off their loads as they passed. There was one point where the road became really narrow through a gorge and we were forced off into the gravel by a truck (watch out Anton and Lina)*. The last 10 miles were downhill though and we managed to make it to the Top 10 Campsite, put up the tent in the pouring rain and be in a steaming shower by 3pm.

We are currently settled down in a lovely sitting room with log fire and massive flat screen TV which we have filled with our wet gear**.  Just hoping nobody else will come in tonight. It is still absolutely pouring outside and the wind is battering the poor tent, but with facilities like this it doesn’t matter. Rotorua is a serious tourist destination because of the thermal springs and geysers which bubble up all over the town. We’d been told it was a very stinky place and sure enough we started to smell the sulphur 20 miles before we got here. On arrival it smelt like bonfire night – I suppose the locals just get used to it. We saw a load of steam blowing around as we passed through, but will try and check it out more in the morning as being soaking wet meant we just needed to get to the campsite.

*We checked out our Swedish friends blog last night and they made it to Wellington a few days ago and have very sensibly decided to get the train up to Tongariro National Park and avoid the slog out of the city. This means they may catch us up! It’s very strange reading their experiences of the same journey – for example they were really excited about the day from St Arnaud to Blenheim where we did 60 miles in 4hrs with the tailwind and downhill, but instead they got pouring rain and no helping wind and it took 8hrs.

**Polly may be in a nice warm room with a flat screen TV and log fire but I have just got back from a 4 mile round trip to the supermarket in the pouring rain.

Great to get the update - it really has been a slog with all those hills - well done. John particularly impressed with your golf Mikey - looking forward to hearing about the sky dive.
Can someone tell me why I seem to have to add a comment before I then get the updates!!!!!
When do you go off to LA - it seems no time since you arrived in NZ - presume it must be about 5 weeks ago.
All love Lindy

Just tried to add a comment without success. Lovely to read all the updates - exhausted at the thought of all these hills - well done. John very impressed with your golf Mikey - looking forward to hearing about the sky dive.
Can anyone tell me why I seem to have to add a comment before I get the most recent entries????
Take care Love Lindy

That was a quick response!! Seems both my comments have been posted - don't think it is the Scottish internet !!!!- probably more likely the inefficiency of the user!! Really thought I was becoming more computer literate.!!
Lovely to hear directly from you

Going on the principal that by adding a comment I might then get updates and hoping to hear about the sky dive if weather has been OK
