Today was an absolute blinder. We have had a few days tough cycling but we were still unsure, with one eye on the flight to LA next week, whether or not to have a day off the bikes.   A visit to the camp reception to confirm a booking on the world famous HukaFalls Jetboat made up our mind. We were staying in Taupo for the day and we were going to make the most of not pedalling up hills.

We were picked up and driven to the river to link up with the jet boat.  The driver of the minibus transformed himself from a very dull chap to a comic genius as he swopped the bus for a seriously powerful jet boat.  It was a first class crazy New Zealand adventure experience.  The boat spun 360 degrees and narrowly missed rock faces as we blasted down the river.  We motored up very close to Huka Falls where the water flowed fast enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool to the brim every 5 seconds (well that's what the driver told me).

Completely shaken by our boat trip we made our way into town where we settled ourselves with a MaccyDs (yep, the day is looking pretty perfect already I hear you say).  Adding to the complete entertainment package we then caught the matinee showing of 'The Hangover Part II’, a blinder of a film (maybe not for you Mum and Dad).

Very pleased with making the most of our day off we strolled down to check out Lake Taupo in the afternoon sun.  There had been snowfall on the hills overnight and the lake looked splendid, paddle boats and water planes included.  On the walk down Polly talked me into my first haircut since a week before our wedding.  Weighing up the ridiculously curly mullet in a shop window and recalling comments on the blog about Jonas Guiterrez, I agreed that it was time for a trim.  The blonde bombshell took only 4 minutes to remove the worst and decide that I now looked more boy band than unkempt tramp.  I was not convinced but it will keep the Mrs quiet for a while!

On arriving at the lake, the floating golf green which I had given a go yesterday, was calling out "come and give me more money to try and win a prize by doing something which most golfers never do in their lifetime".  So of course, we parted with another $20 for 20 balls to try and get a hole in one from a distance of 180yds.

The first few were in range, I hit the platform several times but not the flag.  AND THEN IT HAPPENED. YES, YES, YES, IT REALLY DID HAPPEN.  I got a HOLE IN ONE. Locals stood and watched, explaining that I would be in the local paper.  The photographs were taken and then the big moment, pick an envelope to select the prize.

It was with mixed emotions when POLLY picked out envelope number 4.  I opened it tentatively to reveal “Taupo Skydiving Gift Voucher”. My hole in one has won me a 9:20am flight 12,000ft above Lake Taupo to jump out of a plane.

Well at least if I do it the ground travelling at 200 km/h it won’t have cost me the $300 most people pay!

Hey you guys, I have just spend a really lovely 2hours catching up through your blogs and down memory lane as we've passed most places you described!!! I can't believe that Kiwi man who said cappucinos and lattes were for silly French men!!
I don't envy the hills though. I don't know how you do it, they are everywhere!!! I don't know how far you're going to get up North but Russell and the Bay of Islands is where we started and it was very pretty. The North Island is very different from the South, not as spectacular but it has its charm and beauty.
Good luck with the rest of your trip out there, I hope it carries on as good as now. Looking forward to read more of your fantastic stories!
Lots of love and take care xxxxxxxxx
P.S: We experienced the sandflies at their worst during a 2 days sea kayaking down in Doubtful sound and it was just horrendous. You will glad they don't go North!! Bisous!! xxxxx
