This morning we set off on our 11th consecutive day of cycling and our legs were feeling very tired. Despite assurances from a couple of people that it was 'all downhill to Blenheim' we were still not looking forward to a 65 mile day. We’re used to people telling us routes are flat and downhill and being totally wrong, but for once they were spot on. It’s been a fantastically easy day’s ride. A slight downhill and good strong tailwind have meant that we cruised along at 18mph for the whole day, and only actually spent 4hrs in the saddle – very good going.

It was another brilliant sunny day, and we spent it following Wairau River from the mountainous Nelson Lakes National Park to its valley where we hit endless vineyards. We made such good progress we kept cycling and planned to stop at 35 miles for lunch. A massive blow-out on Mikey’s back tyre at 29 miles put a stop to that, but the presence of a grassy sunshiny verge complete with mountain view meant that it wasn’t a problem to stop. It made both of us think of much worse situations when punctures have hit. The 5 we had on a tricky 100 mile day were pretty bad, as was one I got beneath an underpass on a 5 line highway in Malaysia. The problem with this puncture however was that the tyre needed a patch as well as the inner tube. 3000 miles since China have taken their toll and it was in an appalling state (see photo). We bodged it together with a rubber glove and some electrical tape and hoped that it would last!

Luckily the wind stayed with us and the tyre held on, meaning that we reached Blenheim by 3pm. Time for a leisurely bike round town to find a new tyre before heading to another Top 10 Campsite where we were greeted by a very friendly sausage dog, Fred. Our river side pitch is lovely and being so early we actually managed to enjoy the sun for a bit. We’re now cooking up sausages, eggs and baked beans for supper before trying to book the ferry to the North Island tomorrow! Happy times.

So glad to get back and get my fix of blogs -have missed them very much over thelast week. Still it was the onlyy thing I missed - CJB and I had alovely holiday in France in the most georgeous cottage - Tricia and Betty joined us for a nights stay and we made Betty play scrabble after supper (to my utter amazement she had never played before) and wine had been taken so it was a fairly mad affaire and I'm not sure if she will ever play again! A has shot off to Corfu with Dom so I will not have seen her for 3 weeks by the time she gets back down here in time for Elizabeths great celebration - I was a bit worried to find a book on the dining table entitled the worlds best 1000 Cocktails - I don't know yet what they are planning to give people to drinkall I know isthat it's being held here!

I do hope the North Island is as stunning as the South has been and it is going to by June tomorrow and not that long before we will be welcoming you back in the flesh! Still plenty of time left for more adventures and amazing places to visit. Happy pedalling LOL Jojo

Hello you two pedalling heros. NZ looks breathtaking don't think I fancy cycling up some of those hills. Cycled from Streatham to Brighton last saturday. It became apparent my bone shaker 6 gear bike is not really up to long distances, we made it though. Thought of you two cycling that distance at least every day.. You must be super fit and polly you must be the same size as Polly pocket now.. I leave to work for operation Smile in a couple of weeks getting a bit excited.. Lookinf forward to seeing you really not long now

lots of love xxA
