Flag of New Zealand  , South Island,
Wednesday, May 11, 2011

On the way out of Fairlie I was really upset that I had forgotten to photograph the house next door to the campsite. Its address was 8 Alandale Road, the same as our family home in Birdham. The campsite at No. 10  was great and we enjoyed our breakfast before setting out on a short 28 mile ride.

We spent the first 12 miles going gradually uphill.  It was not steep but enough for us to feel the strain. Entering Burkes Pass we found our dream house (see ) When we stopped at the picturesque village green and found a converted caravan serving fresh coffee we were pretty pleased.  Unfortunately, as is the way on the South Island, there was not a person in sight.  With no chance of coffee we settled for apples and then set off for what we knew was going to be a tough couple of miles.

The climb over Burkes Pass was hard work.  When we reached the top the cloud had masked any spectacular sights and we were left to battle out the next 12 miles without any of the views we had hoped for.  However, when we descended to Lake Tekapo we were in for a treat.  The lake was beautiful, bright blue due to action of glaciers grinding the bed rock to create 'lake flour' which refracts the sun's rays to a greater extent to give the lake such a bright colour.

We checked into the lakeside campsite only for the wonderful host to upgrade us to a cabin, she was worried we would freeze in a tent so tonight we will be enjoying a heater and a bed.  As if things couldn’t get better she directed us to the next place along the lake, THERMAL BATHS !

After a great soak we visited The Church of The Good Shepherd, a church with a view from the alter window to outdo any church in the world.  We also found the sheepdog monument and then did a supermarket sweep before relaxing lakeside for the evening.

Loving New Zealand…

Miles cycled: 28 but it was still really hard work
