We woke up this morning a bit dazed and confused about exactly where we were headed after our plans to hit the islands were destroyed. We set off slowly after breakfasting on the bananas the sweet old lady at the resort gave us. 6 for a room and she gave us free water, soap and a massive bunch of bananas! As we were already 10k away from the highway we decided to keep going on the coastal route and see where we got to – time pressure being off now. The first 40 miles were pretty straightforward, if very slow. The road wound round the coast past lots of very relaxed looking, but empty resorts. We passed a couple of cycle tourers at one who had collapsed in some hammocks for a well-earned rest. They were heading north, and therefore fighting the headwind which has been our best friend for weeks. After an early lunch of more delicious pad thai and decided we should try and make it to Thung Wua Laen beach (just north of Chumphon) and have a day off there, maybe doing some kite surfing.

Two miles later we were gutted to see a sign half an hour later showing Chumphon was still 60 miles away. At that point we hit the hills again, and 100 mile day seemed totally out the question. Deciding on Pathiu as a likely looking spot for hotels, we trudged on and arriving there at 5.45, we were on our last legs. As we stopped at a crossroad, a very helpful old lady came over and practised her English on us explaining that there were not any hotels in town, but if we carried on 10 or 20km we would find a resort. From seemingly nowhere we both got a second wind and sped off – we knew we only had 45 minutes of light.

We made it to what turned out to be Thung Wua Laen beach after 87 miles and after checking out a few cheap/damp bungalows we remembered our good friend George's wedding present and found into a gorgeous room with an enormous balcony overlooking the beach and a massive TV and DVD selection. (Really couldn’t face another cold shower and a mosquito filled room after the last few massive cycles.) An extra lure of the lovely room was the pizzeria next door and after a quick shower we headed straight there – 8 hrs of cycling having made us absolutely ravenous. After homemade pizza for me and a burger for Mikey we made a quick stop at the shop for cornettos and were tucked
up in bed with a DVD by 9pm!

Now looking forward to spending most of tomorrow lying around in our king-sized bed watching more DVD’s and resting our poor weary legs. Might just venture out for a massage and some of the snickers milkshakes we saw next door though…

Miles cycled: 87 hilly ones.
