The previous evening, we'd discovered that after belting through 80 miles to get to Petchaburi, there was nothing a convenient distance from it to head to today. We therefore decided to give ourselves a break and do a short 40 miles to the tourist destination of Hua Hin. This also gave us the chance to head off the highway and check out some more rural Thailand. The roads were still great, but the scenery much more interesting. The traffic was minimal allowing us to cycle side by side and completely relax. Our first stop was the beach after 10 miles. It wasn’t a particularly scenic spot, but we met a very talkative and funny 72 year old man called Sanan who ordered our coffee for us and interrogated us while we drank it.

20 miles later we began to feel pretty hungry and decided to have a long lunch in Cha-am. This is another tourist destination above Hua Hin – not great from what we saw. Lots of tourists and English breakfasts. It’s really hard to judge a seaside resort when the weather is bad however. We found a perfect place for lunch anyway, and had FISH AND CHIPS!!! So great, I’m so glad I’m feeling better and can eat again, although actually on the bike not being able to drink was worse torture. The 74 miles to Bangkok where every sip of water was painful were very bad.

It turned out to be 16 miles from lunch to Hua Hin, but with another strong tailwind we got there in less than an hour. Seeing Starbucks on the way in we knew we were in for some creature comforts, always welcome. Our guesthouse was a good deal, and the owner very kind, even letting us keep the bikes in the kitchen overnight. We had a quick wander round town, and found nothing very interesting, pretty seedy place really. Pizzas completed a relaxing day however and should fuel us for another couple of 80 mile days.
