We left the castle (!) and headed out on quiet country roads back up into more hills.  It was seriously hot and waterproofs were quickly removed.  15 miles was beautiful, up and down through fields with shepherds doing what shepherds do.  In the villages women dressed in bright floral trousers, a different floral skirt, a different bright floral top and an even more different brightly coloured floral headscarf, swept piles of leaves.  Arrived in Varbitsa and checked out the local cafe.  It felt so Turkish, groups of lads sitting around and having a good giggle with us.  Next door we bought sandwiches (?) and other pastries, the lady insisted on putting every item through the microwave, even when I pleaded "no", she zapped it through for a minute.  We stuffed the food into our panniers for the bacteria to start multiplying exponentially.  More wonderful views before resting for a picnic lunch, we were really in the middle of nowhere and it was beautiful.  The map suggested it was only about 20 miles to the hotel we thought we had looked up.  Up a few more hills, loggers waving and cheering as they passed in their loaded up trucks.  The village came after 50 or so miles, we soon realised there was definately not a hotel here, or anything else for that matter other than a bar with loads of locals lined up outside, much too drunk to help us in any way.  The only option was to head on but with the sun dipping we knew this would be tough.  20 miles later we limped into the refuge of a very nice spa hotel in Karnobat.  It had been a nerve jangling last 20 miles, fully fluorecent we were highly visible to all drivers, however, we could not really see the road and potholes, railway tracks and other obstacles made for scary riding.  Nothing a Bulgarian stew couldn't sort out.  The hotel was only a year old and the owners bought out their son to do the English translation.  He was a very sharp young man and good to talk to, also good for carrying bags up to the room!  King size bed and balcony were well deserved after 72 miles up hill, down hill and up hill again.

What a trek - I looked up Burgas on Google - what a wonderful place to get too! The Black Sea always sounds so romantic and presumably you can follow the coast all the way into Turkey. Go on Polly join Mikey for a swim I bet it's a lot warmer than Chichester Harbour. Really looking forward to seeing some pictures.
All love Jojo & Christopher

So glad you guys are alright and going well! Hope you have been enjoying your break from the blog (though we have missed you!) and can't wait to catch up soon xxxx
Ps Olaf says hi and now has six teeth and a new hammer that makes a noise when he bangs it...took him about 5 minutes how to work that out and now likes to make a racket! Probably trying to say I miss Piggy&Mikey! xx
