Sunday morning sunshine made for a lovely Costa Coffee breakfast in the town square before we set off for a gentle 46 miles to Pirot, halfway to Sofia and Bulgaria. Cycling through gorgeous deep valleys with stunning scenery on a near empty red road we were extremely glad we hadn't taken a minor road which undoubtedly would have taken us over the mountains not through. The only scary bit of the day was a few tunnels, but they were pretty short, so not too bad. Following a river and railway we knew that the road was very unlikely to get hilly so we took it easy and just enjoyed the weather and the view. So great to know that we had LESS than 50 miles to do for once. A Fanta stop at 15 miles kept us going to Sunday lunch at Bela Palanka. No restaurants but a picnic in a park by a river was great. Back on the bikes and we made Pirot by 4pm. A tunnel with no lights which was much longer than it said in the sign was the only nasty moment in a very relaxing day. Halfway through the tunnel a curve meant that it was pitch black - very disorientating and made me swerve all over the place. Got through safe though, and although Pirot was just an industrial town, it was a perfect stop and Hotel Gaba was great. Flopped on our beds and watched cheesy Pierce Brosnan films. Only ventured out for a hot dog supper. Couldn't understand anything the girl making them was saying and she was really cracking up at us saying yes to everything she wanted to put in them. Very spicy,  great for me, too hot for Mikey,  but at $1.40 for two enormous hot dogs and a drink we didn't complain. Two naughty stray dogs immediately became our best friends following us back to the hotel and smiling at us all the way.
