After a very long weekend we decided to start today a little later, so we could sleep in a bit longer. We left the house at about 9 am and were on our way to placement. When we were almost to the clinic we heard a big BANG! Ranelle thought we had lost a tire, and we all thought this is just our luck. It wasn't the tire but we weren’t sure what it was so we all walked the little way down the road to the clinic. The AHS students went inside the clinic to start our day at placement while the MPH students waited for a taxi to get them and take them to the school. We were in the lab again with Joshua today at Wema Clinic. We saw quit a few patients today, who were mostly children. We tested for mostly malaria and salmonella. Josh told us a lot about malaria and we were able to see a malaria parasite on a blood slide. He also went into detail about what the treatment and symptoms of salmonella are. Joshua told us that the main symptoms of malaria are shoulder pain, felling tired in the morning, and pain when pupil is dilated. There are also other symptoms, which are common to Brucella. The main differences in these two diseases are that a patient with Brucella will have marked pain and numbness in extremities. While we were at placement a mechanic had come and fixed the van; apparently we broke the tie rod shaft. We picked everyone up and went back to the house to find that the men working on the front gate where back, and making a lot of noise. We all just relaxed and did our own thing. We still have to go into town this evening to pick up a few things for everyone. I have noticed that I have been having black boogers because of all the pollution here. It’s kind of gross. The air here is so dusty and polluted my eyes get really irritated. Oh another thing I have noticed is that all my clothes and sheets are starting to smell like Africa. It is a weird smell that you only find in Africa!
