AFter lunch and a rest break, we headed to La Realidad.  This is a nearby community where the mothers have been trained to sew and sell bedsets that the project then purchases to give to sponsored children on their birthdays.  The women are going to be learning to sew clothing including school uniforms.  This is a great program that gives women a voice in their lives and teaches them a marketable skill.

One little girl was eating leaves off of a stick - just stuffing them in her mouth!  We asked Henry later and he said it tastes good but of course I have forgotten the whole explanation.

We had licorice along.  You aren't supposed to give out candy. I can see not tossing it around like at a parade or something but it is hard to resist these kids!!  I was actually focused on the older children, especially one boy who was there and who is receiving a scholarship to attend school, maybe college.  So we broke out the licorice and shared it with them quietly.  I explained that I didn't have enough for every one so asked them to be "discreet" (!) which they were!  One mother asked me for a piece for some young kids sitting on a wall.  I knew they had already gotten chocolate from another one of us ( no names mentioned to protect the guilty!) which is one reason I chose the older kids.  I told the mom I had only one piece left.  Big smile - "Pueden compartir"
(They can share!)  They share everything down here!

I was also with impressed with the lone man who is in this project.  He wants to become a tailor.  I think in this very macho world it takes guts to associate with women in this way.  I made sure I told him I admired him and wished him much luck.

We had a chance to buy some wares and I bought a bag for Veronica's mom and one for me.
Susan had her eye on the same bag I wanted for the mom but she graciously let me have it.
David "complained" that night at reflection how hard it was for him to shop when we all swooped down on the tables (experienced shoppers) but he actually did quite well for himself!
