After breakfast we checked out and drove to Rio Road to see the mission.  Only I went in and I think that Pat and Danny missed out as it was very peaceful, historic and beautiful.   This was the mission of Fr. Junipero Serra.

We stopped at Safeway in Carmel and bought a cooler, ice and picnic supplies.  We drove to Monterrey and ate at the beach but didn't stay too long.  We continuted on to Santa Cruz where we were lucky to find street parking.  We checked out the boardwalk and took the ride where you ride above on cables.  Big mistake.  I was scared the whole time.  It looks so tranquil from down below.  But it's so high up and the car doesn't seem sturdy.  Longest 8 minutes of my life even with the great beach view.  Danny didn't enjoy it either, he was in his own car.
The boardwalk is not our type of place and this beach had the most people we had seen so we headed off to our next destination, Henry Cowell state park.

Pat has always wanted to see the redwoods and this is an easy walking trail to see them on.
I think we got the general idea of how massive they are, and the trail was quiet. It's only 20 minutes from Santa Cruz, and an easy drive to San Jose, our destination for the day.

We had already seen the Doubletree at the airport when we were leaving the rental car place so it was easy to find.  We had a room on the second floor which meant we could take steps instead of elevators and had easy access to the pool and work out room.  We went to bed early because my presentation was at 8:30 the next day.
