Our flight was delayed but we didn't find out until we got to the airport.  Our 9:30 flight left at 1:00.  Time to kill, not very fun. But it was a nice flight once we left.  Had a layover in Phoenix.  Danny went outside and it was very very hot.

The San Jose airport is small and has a shuttle to the rental cars.  We upgraded to a little bigger car. There was no gas in it but we had paid to start with a full tank and then get to return it empty.  For the inconvenience of having to come back in the lot, we got a free upgrade.

Carmel was easy to find, we were using a tom tom.  Our hotel got very mixed reviews on Trip Advisor so we weren't sure what to expect.  We agree with the positive reviews.  The man at the desk was friendly and helpful, the room was nice and clean and had a mini fridge and microwave, and we slept soundly.  I do agree the walls are thin but people were quiet so it was not an issue.  Also, we were on the side away from traffic.  The grounds are lovely.

We drove down to the beach and explored for a while.  It wasn't crowded and was very nice.
We sat in a tree and relaxed.  Danny went back later and ran the beach.  It was his first vacation since 2003!!

We stopped at the deli (Bruno's, I think) and got some things for supper.  Carmel is an easy town to navigate.  We were not interested in the little shops but if you are, there are plenty of them.
