The ferry terminal in Haines is 14 miles from the center of Haines. We had read that there were shuttle services, but once we were there, we found out that there were no shuttle or taxi services to the ferry terminal.  Apparently, you are expected to hitch a ride.  Fortunately, someone with an expedition company had dropped a customer off at the ferry and was volunteering to take four passengers back into town.  The kindness of strangers!!

We stayed at a B&B near the center of town.  In the realm of small worldness, we discovered that Tom, the B&B owner was from Lansing and stayedin Haines six months of the year and then joined his wife for winter in Michigan (go figure!?).  We enjoyed talking with him over our breakfast each morning.

Near our room was a deck overlooking the cruise dock where we could watch the comings and goings of cruise passengers.  We shared the deck with an elk, goat and bear – we came for wildlife, didn't we? (Pix explain all!)

Other than the grounds of Fort Seward and a few art galleries and shops, we discovered there wasn’t much to see or do in Haines if you didn’t have a car or weren’t willing to pay for private expensive tours.  Since Jim wasn’t feeling well anyway, we took the opportunity to rest up for the next phase of our trip.

In the 2nd act of kindness on our trip to Haines, a fellow B&Ber and his grandson agreed to get up early to take us to the ferry terminal.  Thanks Gus and Cooper!
