Johnston Canyon Campground

Our campground at Johnston Canyon, although conveniently located to the town of Banff, was right near the railroad tracks. An unwelcome alarm via train whistle at 5 AM did not endear us to this site.  But the morning hike in Johnston Canyon did.  The hike is not a difficult one since the trail is on a paved path.  What was most impressive was the part of the hike on catwalks attached to the side of the canyon – you are suspended over the rapids of the river below.  Very cool…  Unfortunately, it is a very popular hike and as we were leaving, the trail got more crowded and you had to turn sideways on the catwalk to let other hikers pass.  The parking lot at the trail head was overflowing into the road and would only get worse as the day wore on.

After the hike, we switched campgrounds to the one near Lake Louise.  After setting up camp, we drove to Moraine Lake;  the attached photos show the beautiful effects of water with glacial flour.  We also went on to Lake Louise, but we got there too late for the light to show the lake at its best, so we planned another visit to the lake the next morning.
