From Boise, we drove the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway to Kalispell, MT. Why Kalispell?  Remember all the previous blogs about crappy weather?  Well, during one rain/wind storm in Idaho, our camper awning got ripped.  We have RV insurance, so we started what became a long frustrating process with our insurance company to get authorization to get it fixed.  We ended up staying in Kalispell MT longer than needed to deal with this…and it's still not over, since the awning material needed to be shipped and won’t be here until 7/14.

But we were in Montana and not about to just sit around the campsite, so we took advantage of the locale to do some side trips – the best being to Whitefish, MT, home to beautiful Whitefish Lake for fishing and boating and Big Mountain (imaginative, eh?) for skiing in the winter.  We took a gondola ride up (and lift chair down) Big Mountain for a panoramic view of the surrounding area.  We also took a drive to Swan Lake and the Swan River Wildlife Refuge -- no big wildlife seen, just birds, butterflies and the quiet that a refuge offers.

The area around Kalispell is quite scenic but we hadn’t seen anything yet…Glacier National Park was next and beat all comers!
