On the way from Florence to Rome, we stopped in Siena – a picturesque Tuscan town north of Rome.

Our local guide explained that the city is divided into neighborhoods (Toads, Owls, etc!!) that are much more than our US neighborhoods. Even if you move away or marry someone from another neighborhood, you are still a member of your family's neighborhood. The neighborhood takes care of you if you are ill, need a home, etc. We could learn from this!

In the main piazza, there is a horse race held every year where the neighborhoods compete against each other. The Piazza Del Campo is oval-shaped and they fill the outer perimeter with dirt to create a horse track. (Check out the first part of the last Bond film (Quantum of Solace) to see Siena during the horse race.)  For the rest of the year, it is the primary place for socializing -- great restaurants and people-watching.  And, of course, the ever-present trouist shops!

We explored the Duomo in Siena. We were continually amazed at the art and architecture of Italian cathedrals and this was no exception.  This particular one allowed photos, so I have included several so that you can see why this is a beautiful cathedral.

Our time was too short in Siena - as with all the cities we visited but the memories will last a long time.
