(Sorry for delay in posting entries - we have been without cell phone and internet service for a while on our road trip!)

We took the Eurotrain from Venice to Florence, while Elio, our bus driver, went by slower route with our luggage. The train ride allowed us to see some of the gorgeous countryside in Tuscany and relax with our fellow tour members.

I was so excited that I would finally get to Florence.  When I attended Florida State, I had a couple of friends who did six months abroad for a study program in Florence.  For some reason that I don't understand now, I had not attempted to get financing or a scholarship to go there and have always wished I had.  Now I was getting my chance - albeit two days and not two quarters!

Florence did not disappoint.  This home of the Italian Renaissance was a physically beautiful and culturally rich city.  We had a guided tour of the more significant art in the Uffizzi gallery - the oldest art gallery in the world, started in the 1580s by the Medicis.   We got to see the "David" statue by Michelangelo - an unbelievable piece of art sculpted from a single piece of marble.   Although we saw many wonderful sculptures on our Italian trip, my favorites were by Michelangelo - not only because of his mastery of depicting the human form, but also because unlike many of his contemporaries, he worked alone and did not have a studio of other artists to assist.

Note:  We couldn't take photos in the Uffizi gallery, so we can't share -- but you can see for yourself some day or take a look at the Uffizi's website:  http://www.uffizi.com/painting-collection-rooms-uffizi-gallery.asp

Like most of the tour, our time there gave us only a sampling of what the city had to offer but it was a very satisfactory sampling - Florence was definitely all I thought it would be!!
