Lake Lugano straddles the border of Italy and Switzerland.  The town of Lugano, where our hotel was, is on the Swiss side, but the populace is Italian-speaking.  This area of lakes in the foothills of the Alps is where Pam's father's family came from, so Pam was especially excited about this first lef of our trip.

Our hotel room had a balcony overlooking Lake Lugano and, therefore, became the favorite hotel room of our trip.  The view was unbeatable - snow-capped mountains reflected in the calm serene waters.  Pam imagined this as the future site of the Fricke European vacation home (after we win the Lotto!!).  With our lottery winnings, we would also buy one of the classic wooden boats that are not really classic but everyday boats in this area.

Back in reality, we took a "funicular" (tram) to the top of one of the nearby small mountains for a view of the region.  All around, houses and sometimes small villages are tucked high into the mountainside.  It's an interesting micro-climate, mild enough for palm trees and yet in the mountains.

The next day, we went on a boat ride to Bellagio (yes, the real one, not the one in Vegas!).  Bellagio is a picturesque town with up-hill pedestrian streets of stairs.  Its primary industries are silk products (90% of silk in Europe comes from there) and selling to tourists like us!!

Next on the agenda (ooh, I haven't had to use that word in a while!!) was a boat tour of Lake Como and the marvelous villas on its shoreline.  Versace and Richard Branson's were the largest, with Branson's being the most picturesque - like something out of a fairy tale.  We saw George Clooney's villa, but alas, George was either not there or hiding from prying tourists's eyes!!  (Ladies - I was ready to execute my plan to fall off the boat and be rescued by him but will have to resort to ER reruns instead!! - Pam)

Our last night in Lugano, we got take-out and sat on our balcony watching the sunset and the stars come out over the lake - heaven!!

We could have spent more time here, but Venice awaited us!
