Roger gets his way and We get the Ferry.

Our 5 am alarm wakes us again. The loud speaker in the street. We have had a better night's sleep even though the bed was rock hard again and I feel a bit more positive today. I however, don’t want to take up Rogers challenge for today’s target. I am worried that by lunchtime when the sun is at its hottest I may feel like I did yesterday. I just want to take it slow, we have no time constraint. Roger want to get to Rach Gia so we can get the 13;00 ferry to Phu Quoc, I would be quite pleased just getting to Rach Gia, sometime today!

Off we set expecting a straight road all the way to Rach Gia, after a couple of Kms we saw that traffic was queuing to pay some kind of toll, even motorbikes that was unusual. Often vehicles do have to pay tolls to use new roads that have been laid to help relieve the congestion in the towns. Anyhow, we queued up with the motorbikes and paid our toll, we then had to cycle into a holding pen, it was then that we realised we were actually going to go on a vehicle ferry. "Tha Vam Cong Ferry" This wasn’t on our map? We pointed at the ferry and asked is it the way for Rach Gia, it seemed so!! A bit hairy getting off the other end but on we went, looked for the road number we should be following, the A 80, there are milestones that would indicate this along the road and yes we were on the right road.

We realised that we had not stopped where we thought we had the night before, names and roads on maps are often different !! Oh Well, right direction anyway…

We stopped for breakfast, yes ice coffee and Phur, Oh! dear its already picking up heat, I kept trying to persuade Roger to reduce his target but all he kept doing was reassuring me I could do it,, only 35 km’s to go, only 30 Kms to go,,, I needed to stop again, used one of those earthenware water buts as I described yesterday and covered myself in stinky water, put an ice cube under my cycle helmet and off again,,,,  repeat the last sentence,,

only 25 Kms to go, cover in self in water, use ice cube,, only 20 Km’s to go,, cover self in water,, put ice cube under helmet….

Hey! Hey ! it’s the outskirts of Rach Gai, only 3 Kms to the ferry, its 12;30. We only need to find the ticket office then find the ferry, ferry goes at 1;00. Found the ticket office, cycled hard to the dock, man at the gate points at his watch and makes a hurry,, Hurry! Signal. We hear the horn go, we round the corner and relax,, people are still getting on. We board, no problems with the bikes, they get taken onto the front and in we get to the air conditioned ferry boat. I am still soaked from my last water but dousing, stinking, sweating, smelly and tired. We had done 76 Km’s,, in 6 hours including lots and lots of stops…

The Ferry takes 2 .5 hours and guess what I feel asleep, we docked, unloaded our bikes set them up and asked directions to “Long Beach” we had been told about a nice resort “ The Beach Club”, we hopped they had rooms available. Only another 12 k’ms to go, the roads on the island are a mixture of tarmacked, gravel, red sand and paths, No sign posts, just lucky for us a very helpful Taxi driver who pointed the way and was stopped at the junctions to check we were taking the correct roads. Dusk was approaching as we got to the resort, hot, smelly, but really pleased to get there and even more pleased that they had rooms….
