2nd Leg of the Journey and We Broke Our Target     14/5/11

Excited or nervous, but we woke at 5;30 for the second leg of our journey. Showered, filled up the water bottles, paid the bill, loaded our bike and were off at 6;45. Only 45 klm's today, heading for Cai Be, we had been told that we could get accommodation and had the words written in Vietnamese to help us.

The start of our journey was very busy, worried about just crossing the road from our hotel, we did it, loosened up and were off. I felt much better today and managed a good speed, got very brave with the traffic, didn’t flinch when the lorries went thundering passed. We stopped for breakfast, filled French bread roll and Café soda, iced coffee, after about an hour and we had done 20klm’s already. We carried on, the roads now becoming much more quiet, tree lined and sporadic villages. We had to cross rickety bridges, I did get off and push where the bridge was narrow and no sides to it, we also had to use 2 ferries to cross the numerous branches of the Mekong river. We arrived at our destination by 9;30, stopped for another Café soda and looked at our map, shall we push on !!? We decided to, it would cut down our travel tomorrow, An Huu looked a good target, so I wrote in Vietnamese, "What way to An Huu" managed to get directions and off we set again. The beginning of this ride was lovely, a little concrete path, occasional motor bike wanting to pass but very pretty meandering beside the Mekong. We then had to go on the A 80, a busy road but flat straight and again a hard shoulder that motor bikes tend to use. We got to An Huu, in fact we had passed it when we saw the sign for hotel, thought as we have seen one we had better stop and use it, they are few and far between. Have just discovered it’s a knocking shop, lots of empty packets of condoms in the drawer!! Well there are no tourists so who actually uses this hotel. The hotel is quite ok actually, clean, air con TV comfy but squeaky bed, can’t wait till latter when they all start, glad I’ve got the ear plugs, ok bathroom and £5;00 a night.

We rode for a total of 3 hours 48 mins, average speed 17 klm’s an hour and total distance 63 klm’s.

After a shower and rest we went for a walk, caused another stir, only tourists here, everyone shouting “Hello” at us. We stopped for a beer and soon had an audience, 15 kids along with their mothers. I asked if I could take a photo of one naughty little girl, she kept on with Roger, Mum said yes and then everyone wanted their photo taken.

We escaped, walked back to the hotel looking for somewhere to eat, the only place was alongside the busy road, bit like an open air transport café, they did sell beer though. The choice was rice or noodles, so another “Phur” for tea, and we were the only customers. £ 4;00. Total spend today £15;00 including hotel…….
