Beautiful Tana Toraja
We spent 2 full days exploring the Tana Toraja area; this is an area high in the mountains of Sulawesi that has kept much of its traditions. Funeral celebrations where pigs and buffalo are slaughtered, the number is dependent on how many grandchildren you have, burial caves dug into the cliff face and long houses which have boat shaped roofs.
On the first day Michele came along with us, we had a map of the area and we planned our route, taking a Bemo to the first village and walking through paddy fields to further villages. The next day Michele wasn't too keen to come after our long trek the day before so we set off alone. However it doesn’t take long to find fellow tourist who want to buddy up, we meet Tina an American lady of about my age travelling alone and Jackson an American male again travelling alone. As before we had planned our route and walked through even more beautiful scenery. We walked about 12 kms mostly downhill but in the heat tiring and found a village where we thought we could get a bus back to the town. It was Sunday and no sign of transport, however there were children playing in the street and they understood what we wanted so one went off to get her Dad. Yes for a small fee, bit extra earnings for him he gave us a lift back to the town, along the way we came across a German couple [ who lived in the UK } with a guide who also wanted a lift back.
A lovely couple of days but more travel tomorrow, 328 kms to Makassar……… MORE LEE’S Tours !!!!!
