Today we went to Miyajima! We bought some breakfast from a bakery in the station before catching the local line train to Miyajima-Guchi where we walked to the ferry port and caught a ferry to Miyajima.

It's very well known for the O-Torii gate which rises out of the sea by the island. It's quite an impressive sight to welcome you to the island. Once we had left the ferry we wondered around and immediately found quite a few of the deer which roam around the island freely. They were very people friendly and sought out any food or paper based items to eat including a woman's magazine and someone else's leaflet.

We headed first to the cable car area where you can go up Mt. Misen. It took quite a walk to get there but we took some photos of the Torii gate along the way. Once at the cable car we got a single trip so that we could walk back down the mountain. The weather was lovely so this made it even better. The cable car was pretty good although we had to share our car. After that trip we thought it was the end but nopes, another cable car which was a bigger one but we all had to cram in.

From there we walked to the temple and summit of the mountain and got pretty good views across Hiroshima and the landscape. We then went back down and found the path that led us back down to the bottom. It took quite a while and was also quite testing for our fitness but we made it in good time and it was lovely to have the sun and blue sky as well.

At the bottom we found a lovely little place to have some noodles or curry for lunch since we were starving. After that we went back down, looked at a few of the temples on the island and then wondered around the shops for a while. It was getting into the mid afternoon then so we hopped back onto the ferry and then got the train back to Hiroshima.

We rested in our hostel for a bit and chatted to an Australian brother and sister who were travelling around Japan for a few weeks. They were struggling to decide what to do for their last few days when they got back to Tokyo so I lent them my copy of Japan by Rail. It seemed to help them and we talked quite a lot and then we both thought it would be a good idea to grab some dinner. We showed them the tempura udon place we had found a few days ago and they seemed happy with that so we ate there. They're really nice people, the sister being an opera singer and the brother a lawyer.

Anyway, after dinner we headed in search of a bar with them to grab a beer and seemed to wonder into the darker more dodgy parts of Hiroshima. We found a cute little bar/restaurant where we got a beer and chatted some more before heading back to the hostel. A good day!
