This morning we woke bright and early to catch the Australia Zoo ( a.k.a Steve Irwin Zoo) bus which departs from opposite our hostel. How convenient! It was only $5 return which is pretty good value for Australia. It took about an hour and a bit to get there from us leaving Noosa at 8:30am. Once we arrived we showed them our voucher from Peter Pans and went in. Immediately I spotted a worker with a small crocodile that you could pet and hold. I was a little nervous to but did hold its body and she held the head. They have a very soft and squishy underbelly whilst their top skin is more rough but also squishy. It was a weird feeling but I'm glad I've held one and have a small print photo of it which was free to show on our return. Jennie also held it and agreed that their underbelly is more soft that she thought it'd be.

We moved on and went over to the elephant sanctuary where you could feed the elephants! And it was FREE! It was so cool so we each did it about three times and got photos of each of us feeding an elephant. All you had to do was queue up for one of two elephants and when you got to the front you just had to pick a piece of food out of the bucket and stand on a red mat in front of it and they would then take it out of your hand with their trunk. It was the first real encounter I've had with an Elephant and the same with Jennie so it was really cool to get so close to one. Their skin is very rough and the end of their trunks are quite moist as our hands discovered after feeding. You can see the photos when we get back.

After that we just wandered around the zoo and saw more kangaroos, koalas, snakes, birds and lots more which you can see the photos of too. We were really waiting for the main show of the day which was in the Crocoseum which was like a fair sized stadium. The show was really cool. At first they did the bird section where loads of birds were released into the open air stadium and they all flew around over our heads and went to their trainers - so well trained! There was a selection of some small birds and then a few that were huge. One flew from its pen across the other side of the zoo all the way to the stadium which was very impressive.

They then moved onto the reptiles and brought out some snakes into the audience for us to see and also a guy went into the pool in the stage area with a snake and it swam around a little. Then they got to the main part of the show with the crocodile. It was pretty big and they showed us how fast they can move and how high they can jump to catch food using their tail. It was very impressive. We did think there would be more but that was it. Still, we saw lots of things we probably wouldn't have seen at another zoo.

From then, we walked over to the tiger sanctuary after having some lunch to see a show they had. The tigers were so beautiful and the trainers showed us how they only encourage behaviour from the animals, never forced them. Three trainers with three tigers showed the different behaviours of tigers when feeding and trying to catch food. They also showed how high the tigers can jump and climb trees in order to get meat. If a tiger is chasing you then definitely don't climb a tree!

Finally, we went to their new area - Africa where we saw some zebra, some giraffes and a rhino. As we were heading back, we also saw a cheetah being taken for an afternoon walk by the trainer!

The coach back to Noosa left at 4 so we had to head back to it then. There was a lot more stuff we could have done at the zoo to get close up with all the animals but that was all so expensive and it seemed better to try and do that in their natural habitat. We both had such a good day though and the weather was SO HOT and SUNNY! It felt like all our wishes for a hot day were being answered with one superbly hot day.

More soon, Rikki x
