After disembarking the boat we had 5 hours to kill in Puerto Montt, a grotty little town half way up Chile, with remarkably little going for it apart from a bus out. We killed the time emailing and going to the dodgiest cafe in the world. With an hour to go we decided to go shopping for snacks to eat on the bus journey across the border. As it is prohibited to bring fruit or vegetables (and bizarrely semen according to the form we were given, I wonder what searches are conducted for that?!) we opted for chocolate biscuits. However, walking along the aisles I spotted for the first time in literally months a bottle of tobasco! How much had I been craving this! Now as a vegetable based product I was not sure of the legality of carrying this across the border but my cravings took over and I decided to become a tobasco sauce smuggler! I decided to not put it in my backpack but shove it inbetween the seats on the bus as we went through customs. As I swetted, several people had their bags rifled though and a sniffer dog strolled casually about. I had visions of "Midnight Express" scenarios as the soldiers wandered through but eventually we were told to reboard the bus and on we went! I had done it! We arrived in Barriloche, with maybe the only bottle of tobasco in Argentina!

I shall report soon on how the tobasco tasted.............
