If you want to surf, get a tan, party, see dolphins, snorkel with fish, party again, then get sucked into the "black hole"... well then Welcome to Lagos!
In our European guidebook, all it said was that Lagos (we are in Portugal now) was one big Black Hole, and it is totally true. People think they are coming for 2 days and stay for 2 months (or in one guys case I met 2 years!)
As soon as we arrived (after another 6 hour bus ride) it was 11pm and there were a lot of locals offering rooms to us for pretty cheap. But since I am totally skeptical of anyone who offers me something I havenīt asked for... Colin and I decided it would be best to follow the other travellers from the bus. We met Cory (a guy from Vancouver) and Caroline and Nick (a couple from Australia) and since it was raining (Caroline and Nick were going to camp) we all decided to buddy up and go with Cory to the "Rising Cock" (yes a real name). Since we didnīt know where it was and no one had a map, it ended up being a great thing that everyone on the streets spoke English and walked us right up to the doorstep. Everyone spoke English because they were all tourists who havenīt left yet and worked at this or that bar or hostel!!
We got rooms, ditched our bags and partied all night. Every bar had someone outside offering us some kind of free shot or drink... which we happily did. The next morning Caroline and Nick headed to the campground and Colin and I headed to the (much nicer) CarlosīHouse for the next 2... no one stays for two... so we stayed for 3 nights.
Thinking this place was a total frat town with out much else going on, we headed to the beach. The beach...the beach... was UNBELIEVABLE!! Alcoves protect you from the wind, the water is cold but refreshing and a pristine green blue color. The sand is a warm yellow and there are 5 perfect beaches to choose from so it isnīt very crowded.
The last 2 days have been almost the same, party at night, wake up to beautiful sunshine, rock the beach for 5 hours (swim, snorkel, tan etc) shower, go upstairs and meet up with the people from the dorm... uh hostel... and party again.
Donīt worry though, youīd probably hate it here... yup... not missing anything back home!
Leaving tomorrow to go to the "real Portugal" where people donīt speak English, we head out on the train to Lisbon. It is going to be sad to leave all the people we have met here, but good to tone it down a little bit too!
Thanks for reading, email us and let us know what is going on back home!
Families, we will be getting phone cards ASAP, so we will be trying to call you soon!
Until next time! Chão bellaīs!
