B & B Notti Romane
About 4 kilometres before Assisi, we pass through a small town called Santa Maria degli Angeli. It has an imposing and amazing Basilica which is crowned by a magnificent dome designed by Alessi. We are just in time to see the Sunday service which had numerous security personnel controlling the ebb and flow of all the participants and sightseers (us included). The crowd meandered from the main hall having the service into smaller chambers and halls, eventually coming out at the back end of the building. Unfortunately, no pictures were allowed to be taken within the main building and the entire event will have to be consigned to the ageing memory banks of the writer and better half
After spending some hours in Assisi we reluctantly moved on to our second scheduled stop - Spoleto. The main purpose was to see the Ponte delle Torri. This bridge erected between the 13th and 14th centuries, remains today in original form - a testament to the builders of that era whom worked without the modern conveniences and engineering skills of the present day. As has been the case with most of our Italian sightseeing, there is far more to see and experience than hours in the day, and Spoleto was no exception.
The sun was low in the sky when we departed, and we cancelled any other scheduled stops we may have had on the itinerary, and drove the quickest and most direct route toward our nights B&B accommodation in Infernetto. Tonight will be our last night of our holiday, however before we arrive into Infernetto (a seaside suburb of Rome), we have planned another action day of sightseeing.
Upon arrival, we quickly checked in, and walked to the nearby (and recommended by our host) Ristorante Al Cinghiale. Whilst we would not normally have chosen such a restaurant, it was remarkably more pleasant than we anticipated and in its parochial way, a fitting end to our dining experiences of the last 100 days.
