We swing up and off the stone road alongside the Ottauquechee River and onto the bridge crossing that will take us into Woodstock VT. We pass by the town's main attraction - The Marsh Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. Our hunger overrides the desire to stop for a look and we continue up to Main Street where we find a small cafe for lunch. Woodstock is regularly voted one of America's prettiest towns.

After lunch and a short stroll around town we head off again toward Brattleboro - our accommodation for the evening. Whilst there are many small villages along the way, we figure we have: seen the best, forget the rest (for today anyhow).

It is late afternoon when we roll into Battleboro. The town is looking pretty ordinary and the people even more ordinary. We turn into the hotel entry and check in. The first room we are given smells like an ashtray, so we go back to reception to ask for another. The receptionist looks and looks and says she will have to put us up on the second level. That's ok by me, I am thinking, as it must be better than level 1.
The second room we are given, the key card is not working. At least the hallway smells a bit better, I am thinking as I walk back the long corridors to reception for the second time.
"OH! I am sorry" says the receptionist as she programs 2 more key cards.

"Damn! these cards don't work either". " I am not going back this time - you can go and I will watch the bags".

"Damn! these cards don't work either". "There's a phone on the wall. This time I will ring and the receptionist can come here!".

"Yes, Yes! OK I will come down". I mutter to myself as I walk those long corridors back to reception.

"At least the room doesn't smell too bad, and there is double glazing on the windows which does block most of the noise from that freeway we look over because we are the last room in the complex" I rationalise as I check out the rest of the room. "I think that was my black hair (the only one I had by now) that fell out when I was inspecting the sheets!! It must have been cleaned - there are clean towels and new soaps! They must have just forgot to put more toilet paper in the holder!".

We go down to Main Street to try to find somewhere other than McDonalds, Burger King or Dunkin'Donuts to eat. "Let's try this Italian Trattoria the GPS is showing as a POI (Point of Interest). "What do you want for a free program downloaded from the internet - it was never going to be the latest updated version. How would it know they decided to pull the building down!".
"Look that place across the road looks ok, and there seems to be some regular type people eating there".

"Wow! that was an oasis in the desert - let's go back to the Comfort Inn (what an oxymoron!) so we can get an early start". Beam me up Scotty!
