Medieval fortress and upper and lower towns situated on a pennisula that's more of a giant rock in the Aegean.  The name litterally menas "one entrance" as there is just a tunnel entrace from the causeway leading to the mainland into the lower city.
Amazing histoy of habitation and invasion since the 6th C (CE).  Trade city historically, but has become a quiet holiday location.
Hiked up to the abandoned upper city, built into the slopes and along the plateau - ruined now except for the Byzantine church at the top that is still in use.

writing this in 2008, i still remember this evening vividly, sailing south from Monemvasia.  We were treated to the most amazing light show.  Great forks of lightning on the horizon from sky to sea, seemed all around us.  Yet, no thunder at all, even the sea was calm, light up in bold white relief.  it was phenomenal.
