We left our excellent accommodation at about 8:30 and headed for the local garage and General Store to fill up with coffee and gas. The Karaoke didn’t keep us awake and we both had a good night’s sleep. We then headed west to the ghost town of Rhyolite - a left-over from mining days.
We then headed back to Furnace Creek and enjoyed a breakfast and writing post cards. Onwards south towards Badwater Lake taking in the 3.5 mile Artists Drive before stopping at the gorge containing the Natural Arch. It was 93˚F in the shade and it was steep 400m climb up loose gravel to reach the arch - but it was worth it, particularly because we had the place to ourselves.

We continued south along the salt lake flats. The surprise of the day was that we encountered two coyotes about half a mile apart. The first was standing in the middle of the road and walked in front of the car to make us stop. He/she came up to the window  as though he/she was in hope of a tit-bit. He/she slinked off disappointed. The second one was less brave and immediately moved off the road as we approached. This gave me a great photo opportunity which I seized upon. We then proceeded via Shoshone to Las Vegas.

Las vegas is full-on in-your-face lights, noise, alcohol, gambling and girls. Wow - what a contrast from Death Valley, We navigated our way to the Fitzgerald’s Casino Hotel (rebranding itself as 'The D') in the Downtown area. This was my first experience of valet parking - goodness knows where the car is! We grabbed what we could from the car and waved it goodbye - checked in and were offered a room on the 25th floor overlooking east Las Vegas - awesome as the full moon came up!

We found ourselves to be next to the famous ‘Golden Nugget” Casino and the whole area is alive with noise and colour - I am glad we ere 25 floors above the mayhem. Every Casino or Gentlemen’s Club has girls strutting their stuff up and down and wearing not vey much! Lead us not into temptation but save us from the time of trial!

We enjoyed an excellent meal at a local Thai Restaurant and the had a drink at our hotel’s Sport’s Bar overlooking the zip-wire fun and mayhem. An early night as tomorrow we are hoping to make the 4,5 hour drive to the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon.

Stay tuned.
