It all started with an item I wanted on eBay. Instead of paying 35 in the UK I could it for 12 in the US - but the postage made it almost the same cost as buying at home. Then I noticed that one of the sellers was in San Diego - a couple of emails later and I had arranged to collect in person. What's more he gave a further couple of dollars discount - so it turned out to be a real bargain - if you don't count the cost of the fuel! It was a 220 mile round trip - about 2.5 hours each way. Still, it did give me a chance to see a city I've always wanted to visit. It is just a pity that the sun didn't come out to play.

The Freeways carve right through the city and I soon found myself heading over the massive and impressive Coronado Bridge. There were some Marbled Godwits wading at the water's edge and plenty of Pelicans dive-bombing the poor fish. The harbour is huge and home to the US Navy's Pacific Fleet. there were warships and aircraft everywhere - and a huge Coast Guard facility that I almost got sucked into!

Back in the north harbour area I looked at the USS Midway - an aircraft carrier now a permanent exhibit, the Fish market restaurant and some very tame Herons. I didn't feel like exploring the city centre - it looked pretty much like ost of the others. I did head along the coast for a while to Point Loma and walked along the beach at Newport Beach - a less salubrious version of its namesake further north.

The trip home was tedious as the Interstate was beginning to get busy. At point all five lanes ground to a halt as US Border people pulled a van over and dealt with the occupants - Mexico is only 10 miles south of San Diego.

After such a short night last night, I think it will be an early one tonight!

Duncan, I didn't think it would be possible, but you're making me quite homesick for good ole California! I lived for 4 years in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas and your stories have taken me back... particularly as the weather here at the moment is about as lousy as it could be! Bring on the sunshine... Glad you're enjoying your trip, see you on your return. L.
