Another day another (short bus ride) to the former French Pondicherry where the streets still have French names & signs as well as Indian ones. We stopped at Auroville on the way, a wacky community based on enlightenment and living in harmony - yeah well - the central golf ball like meditation building was closed for repairs so I guess collateral warranties didn't get too much attention.
Walked the fairly wild seafront promenade and will do the French quarter when its cooler. very unique place with the cleanest streets in India (how do they do it?). we had a birthday in our small group today and actually found a birthday cake. For Breakfast we found a French bakery and pigged out on croissants, pain au chocolate and plum cake. This was after a wedding next to the hotel set of the fireworks and drums at midnight..

Or next adventure is the day train to Madurai - more interesting conversations with curious locals and chai - by the way do you know the book stalls on Indian stations here are called Higginbothams; scrabble came out for first time so trip must be going well.
