Leaving Ooty we are dropped at the top of the Nilgiri Hills and do the 3hour trek down through the forest; this is a really good walk but 100% down so I have a slightly tight calf; they have large red malabar squirrels here as well as lots of eagles and hornbills; of course the guide showed us the leopard droppings. We stayed at a jungle retreat which was excellent - 12 of us in one big dorm is by the by. The Aussies had mixed views on their election result but one was buying the beer. We went into the National Park and Liz, Jacqueline and I were able to join in the elelphant washing in the river; we then went on to the feeding station including one orphan.
On to Mysore and I have to admit I wasn't expecting the fabulous palace which is lit up every Sunday - between 65000 & 80000 light bulbs is the estimate - couldn't help thinking of the Harrods and Mr Bean episode though when it lit up. As it was rebuilt in 1912 it's also very interesting inside.
I also made the Railway Museum which is rather twee (it costs 6p) and has the former Maharaja's train carriages in it.
No mishaps in what is a more typical Indian town - we're crossing the road like veterans now.
The roads are spectacularly bad - there is no God of road building - and we saw 2 little accidents in 5 minutes - however most traffic goes so slowly it's usually appears minor.
We are at the local tour managers house and then headed of for the night train to Chennai (Madras) - Liz managed a beer and nibbles shop just before we left...
