Peter the permaculture farmer contacted us in Ballan through HelpX to see if we were able to help him on his small holding. Luckily we had a window before we headed to our next HelpX/House sit in Cockatoo, it was a good chance to get our feet wet with some practical experience on a farm and seeing if helping people like this would suit our way of travelling.

We were very lucky we agreed to stay with Peter, he is one in a million, the kind of person who's passion for living his own lifestyle can't fail to inspire you that you can achieve you own dreams if you put your mind to it.

What he has achieved over the last ten years on a single acre block is amazing, on a flat peice of ground he started by building a dam, planting a orchard and after living in a caravan and travelling up from Melbourne and working on the property at weekends only he now has a house, garage, veranda, vegetable and fruit patches, chickens, ducks hydroponic and eventually will have aquaponic grow beds fed from his dam.

He uses the HelpX and Woofing community to his full advantage, but he makes all his guests feel like kings. We slept in our van has he had other travellers in and our of his spare rooms and caravans, we ate amazing organic vegetarian food and we probably feel the most healthy we have ever been!

We met a English couple briefly and worked with a young Korean called Kim and Clovis a French builder, both are great characters and we are sure we will keep in touch with them. The work we did during the week included fruit pick and sorting, drain laying, cooking, cleaning, chopping wood, looking after the chickens and building the aquaponic shed.

We worked long hours but the work was fun and the pace was steady and the fact we ate like kings kept us going, I can't believe we were there only a week it felt like we did so much in our short time.

I hope we keep in touch with Peter and our new friends, if any of our other planned HelpX jobs are half as enjoyable as this one, we as Peter would put it are in for a 'cosmic' treat!
