I'm not sure why but we just haven't taken to Italy. On the positive side its stunningly beautiful, fantastic food and history which is all well documented, but it just didn't do it for us. I guess a country is only as good as its people and unless your getting away from it all in the mountains you have to meet a few of the natives.

We have been to Rome before but the pace of life is so hectic in the big city maybe we missed how Italians are up close. From the moment we left Monaco and crossed the border into Italy the vibe on the road changed instantly, no more letting people out with a friendly wave, this was every man for himself and two fingers if your to slow! I can safely say the overall majority of Italians have been inspired by Michael Shumaker and treat driving as a person quest to emulate him at any opportunity. This kind of driving makes the Spanish look like little old ladies popping to the shops on a sunday afternoon. They will take any risk on any bend to get one tenth of a second ahead, and god forbid if as a foreigner you accidently go the wrong way, you may as well flash your bottom to the Pope!

So getting of the road and mixing in with the locals may seem a better option. Now I read somewhere the Italians take a great deal of pride in their appearance, and its a sign of wealth to dress nice and impress your friends, so when two scruffy backpacker types with flip-flops and t shirts take to strolling in a sleepy village on a sunday afternoon its the same reaction as taking a wrong turn in your car if you get my drift.

Maybe its just us, maybe we didn't get the right signals, but you just know when a place doesn't feel right. We did however have a great time taking in the views of the north on the quieter roads and we did see some great sights in the villages and towns, special mention to Parma which I thought would be a bit hard work but had a great urban vibe, reminded me of Manchester with better weather and a bit more history!

So when my Dad said he planned to come over to Italy for a week to see us and go camping somewhere in Italy or Slovenia we decided to go to Croatia while we wait for his flight and maybe we will give Italy another go when he gets here, second time lucky?

No vegi food in Spain
Glad you are finding plenty of free parking. Steve is counting how many times you write that!! I spotted your vegi barbecue but have to confess to eating the fish in Spain too ( we just had a week there) and even calamari in a really great tapas place. Sorry! We just followed you to the Alhambra on June 3rd and loved it. Keep enjoying it! Love Steve and Anne xx
