We spent the next five days perched high in the Ecuadorian Andes in the city of Quito. The main purpose of our stay was to negotiate a good deal for a Galapagos Island cruise. We hadn´t intended to spend so much time in Quito however ´Operation Galapagos´ took us longer then we anticipated! Ben, to his credit, did a fantastic job and after a solid couple of days on the phone managed to lock in a great deal.

In between negotiating our trip and watching drug deals transpire on the streets below our hostel (we were not staying in the safest place in Quito) we were able to squeeze in a bit of sight-seeing. Together with a bunch of travellers from our hostel we took in the sights of the ´old town´, scaled the heights of the bascilica (which would most definitely NOT have passed OH&S standards in Australia), and even made it to the centre of the world - the equator line.

Being our first time at such a high altitude (Quito is 2800m, Mt Kozciuszko is only 2200m!), we (particularly me) felt the effects of mild altitude sickness. God help us in Peru and Bolivia where we will have to ascend to 4700 metres! I was therefore very relieved when we descended to sea-level and disembarked at the Galapagos Islands.
