Where I stayed
Various - did Gecko tour for 10 days

Flag of Costa Rica  , Province of San Jose,
Tuesday, September 2, 2008

Joined an interesting group of folks (about 14 in total from the UK, Australia, NZ) for a pre-arranaged tour of Costa Rica.  The city of San Jose is a bit of a non-event but did a day trip up to La Paz Waterfall Gardens (about a 2 hour mini-van ride from the city one way).  Got some great shots of toucans and macaws (in captivity unfortunately but let's face it, chances of getting them in the wild are pretty remote) - check out the photos .... the birds are my favourite - unbelievable colours!!

Also, headed up to Monteverde - lovely cloud forest, very damp and drizzly but it kind of suited the environment up there.  Next stop La Fortuna - nice town and quite well to do by Costa Rican standards.  If you can afford it, try staying at Los Lagos - excellent natural spring pools with hot water and slides etc..  There's a place about 15 mins from La Fortuna called "Iguana Corner" - I've never seen so many huge iguanas in one handy location - there were several well over a metre in length!  Also do the volcano viewing at night (ie, Volcan Arenal) - I was quite surprised at just how active it is but you can only really see the red hot boulders tumbling down the mountain when it's dark.  Guy called Christian from the Los Lagos crowd was an excellent guide - really knew his stuff and was genuinely interested in the environment (I believe).

Next and final stop was Puerto Viejo - I didn't like it at all but there were some very nice spots just out of Puerto Viejo, eg. Punto Uva to the south.  I stayed at Banana Azul resort for quite a few days and loved it there - was a nice retreat and great people running the show.  Great food too!  Unique design, very open and lots of lovely timber work etc.
