Luckily the film Red Riding didn't keep us all awake on Mum and Dad’s last night, although even if it did we still would have had plenty of time to recover on Saturday as we enjoyed a leisurely lunch and a lovely lamb dinner made by Margaret. Unfortunately the relaxing feast was disrupted by my spotting a squirrel struggling to pull itself along by its front legs, as its back ones had been run over on the main road. At first I thought he was just being nosey watching us all enjoying our lamb, but as he shimmied along the dirt like an army officer completing his training in the mud we soon realised he was seriously hurt. A call to the animal society was made whilst Daniel used a fish net to scoop up the doomed vermin and place him into a box to await his maker’s arrival. Even though it’s a long weekend the lady turned up within the hour, kitted out in her gloves and uniform, and with a towel to protect the squirrel as he fell into the metal cage; he didn’t fight as he was taken away to be put down. At least our spotting him meant he didn’t spend the whole night suffering before dying.
Following that wrenching drama I enjoyed a cup of tea with Mum and Dad before the car was loaded up and we headed off to the airport for their midnight flight back to England; somehow two weeks have passed by without a minute to stand and stare. I hope they don’t regret coming out here to see me, especially as I was so short with them the majority of the time. At least I made them laugh before we left them by demonstrating yet another mishap as we pulled out a trolley for their luggage; Mum struggled to pull one out from the queue before I made my way over and saw the twenty-five cents sign, so I gathered a quarter from Dad only to find I was looking at the wrong end of the queue. Back I headed in search of a $2 coin, followed by a third walk back which saw a successful attempt to get a trolley and they were finally able to load their bags before hugs and kisses preceded their departure. Until next time.
