Leaving Tofo for Vilankulo was pretty easy. A short chapas ride to Inhambane, followed by a half hour ferry ride across the bay to Maxixe (pronounced Mashish) and then a four hour chapas to Vilankulo.  I would have got here earlier though, had a South African guy called Peter picked me up in Inhambane to drive me Maxixe as we'd agreed to the day before.  Oh well, the ferry was worth Mtc10 (~20p).

So Vilankulo does not have the soft sandy beaches that Tofo does, but it does have the kind of sea-scenery you picture when you think of the Indian Ocean – turquoise waters, islands in the distance, colourful fishing boats floating in the bay.  Lovely.

I did little here to be honest.  I caught up with the interweb for the first time in a while, talked to my mother and met an English guy called Ryan, who was fun to hang around with, and caught up again by chance with Mikael.  I met Mikael in Maputo and travelled with him to Tofo, before we went our separate ways.  After we’d parted I tried to email him to tell me of my plans but it turns out I can’t read French handwriting: computer said 'no’.  Chance is a fine thing - it was nice to catch up.

Mikael though had a sorry story to tell when we met up again.  His first night in Vilankulo – the night before I met up with him again – he had all his belongings taken from his dormitory room.  Everything except the sleeping bag he was in, his shoes and the clothes he was wearing the day before.  His bag, his passport, his camera, his toothbrush, everything.  All he was left with was the clothes I saw him in and Mtc7 (15p).  I gave him a shirt of mine, a spare toothbrush and toothpaste, some Malaria pills and some money.  He was just at the end of his trip so he will fly home to France in a few days anyway, but it is not a good end to any holiday.
