Where I stayed
13/1/11
Another train trip which left at 0715 towards Casino on then a bus to Byron Bay. Arrived at hostel which apparently is the only hostel with beach access!! Our room had 2 double beds in it which seemed a bit peculiar!! Luckily we had wonderful roommates – Jonas and Margaret and it couldn't have worked out better. Once we had met each other, we all relaxed and knew we would get on!
14/1/11
Happy Birthday Phil.
Checked emails then went into town and treated Phil to a bacon and egg roll with ketchup!! Next to Woolworths for food shopping – not very interesting I know, but a backpacker's essential job! Beers then bed.
15/1/11
After breakfast we walked to the lighthouse which was very picturesque along the coastal path. We did manage to see dolphins in the sea just off the surf by the rocks (not sure if they came out in the photo) 2 ½ hours later we arrived back at the hostel for lunch. In the afternoon we swam in the sea although the current was impossible as it dragged you down the beach – so we stood in the sea and jumped the huge waves! In the evening we met up with our roommates and enjoyed an evening of entertainment – an Aussie playing a didgeridoo with drums – quite good actually.
16/1/11
We hit the beach again, standing only!! Then we found a market which was one like no other as it was more like a hippie affair. There were stalls selling everything you associate with the flower power movement – tie died clothes, essential oils, yoga clothes, etc. A group of people were gathered playing musical instruments – drums mainly, some were dancing or more like prancing about but it was mesmerising to watch.
17/1/11
We relaxed today as we were catching an overnight train back to Sydney.
