After nearly 2 weeks in the Czech Republic, we knew our time visiting our family would eventually end.  You kinda hope it never ends, but we all need to get back to reality sooner or later.  We were not looking forward to our trip home either, that's for sure, especially since going West is always longer than going East.  Can you say headwind?

Anyway, our son-in-law came up with the brilliant plan to put us on a bus at 3:20 AM from Brno to Vienna to avoid having to drive us there himself for our 7:45 AM flight.  But actually, it was a good plan.  Our bus ride was comfortable and uneventful and our flight to London went off without a hitch.  That's where the good times ended.  Or so it seemed.

As we made our way thru Heathrow and then to our boarding station for our 10:15 AM flight to Chicago, we were met with a full waiting area.  Standing room only.  After an hour wait, we heard on the public address that our boarding time would be delayed by 20 minutes.  It was already a half hour overdue.  We smelled trouble after a rep could not give us a definitive time for a new boarding time.  No problem for us, we already were facing a nearly 5 hour wait in Chicago for our flight to Harrisburg. Why not kill an hour or two here?  But, during our initial wait, we had been observing a young mother of 3 fighting to keep her 9, 5 and 2 year old entertained after she had given up her stroller to be loaded on the plane.  It wasn't until we got the bad news, that our flight was delayed indefinitely because of mechanical problems, that the young woman became distressed.  The three families, us included, that had been watching her the last hour and a half,  jumped to her rescue.  In a matter of seconds, you could tell none of us were going to abandon this military wife.  After we retrieved her stroller, we all headed to the center area of Heathrow, all 12 of us, as her two year old screamed his head off. By now she felt like a lousy mother and a little embarrassed and the tears flowed.  After a bathroom break we managed to find a space to sit down in a restaurant and ordered sandwiches until they posted our new departure time.  As this young mother began to relax,  it became evident to Lori and I that we had been in the right place at the right time.

It was just a couple weeks earlier that we heard a message called "Upper story, Lower story" where the Pastor described how our lives on earth are the Lower story, while God works out the Upper story.  What could have been a anxious wait for any of us on our own, became a bonding time for the 4 families.  We learned about each other, where we were going, where we came from and why we were traveling in the middle of February. We met as strangers and left as friends. God's  plan is always bigger than what meets the eye and we got to see some of that Upper story for ourselves.

We arrived in Chicago with just an hour to make our connection home.  Remember the commercials with O.J.Simpson running through the airport.  Well that was us, minus the hurdles.   But we made it without much of the stress we were anticipating.  And when we got to Harrisburg, we were picked up by some selfless friends who then drove us home to round out our 25 hour journey.

What a trip!  Our grandkids are fine and growing up fast.  Our daughter and her husband are doing well and seem to be adapting to the Czech culture again.  And we'll remember this trip for a long time.

That's our story and we're sticking with it!
