Lake Tekapo Campsite

After having a picnic lunch on the black sandy beach of Kaikoura we left and headed 300km south to Lake Tekapo. We arrived at 8pm after a long drive through beautiful scenery once again. In the total darkness finding a campsite was easy, making the bed was virtually impossible.

It wasn't till the morning and sunrise when we realised where we were camping. A picture postcard spot on the shore of Lake Tekapo. It was simple stunning to see.

That morning we went on a 10km walk up Mount John and around Lake Tekapo. We took thousands of photos with every one of them easily making a postcard. The views of the sky blue lake at the top of Mount John were amazing to see. With the sun shining and the clear blue skies we could see for miles. The reason for the vivid blue colour of the lake is due to glaciers moving over millions of years, crushing the mountain and rocks into a fine powder. That powder mixes with the water and gives it the bright blue colour.

That afternoon we visited the Church of the Good Shepherd on the shore of the lake, before heading west via Twizel to Aoraki the base of Mount Cook.
