Where I stayed

After taking the Airbus flight from Singapore we arrived in Sydney at 6pm. A quick shuttle service from the airport to our hostel and we were there in out hostel within an hour. The hostel we stayed in was near the Kings Cross area of Sydney. A typical backpackers place, with a shared toilet but reasonably priced compared to other places in Sydney.

The next day we walked towards the Hyde Park area of Sydney and then through Pitt Street where all the shops and offices are located. Sydney as a whole is super clean. Even during rush hour it doesn't feel busy even though there are 4 million people living there.

We ended up walking to Circular Quays where all the boats enter and leave Sydney Harbour. We continued up to the Rocks area where the old part of Sydney originated back in 1788. There are a lot of old stone buildings scattered amongst the new glass office blocks and restaurants.

That afternoon we walked across the "Giant Coathanger" aka the Sydney Harbour Bridge and up the stone pylons to view the city. The views here were exactly the same as the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb but for a tenth of the price. In the end we decided not to climb the bridge as the price was ridiculous ($340!!). We still managed to see the same great views of the Sydney Opera House, Harbour and the city itself. It was at this point when we both said that it was weird seeing the Sydney Opera House in front of us, as we’ve seen hundreds of images on TV or on photos. It sank in that we were on the other side of the world!!

Later that evening we met up with Rob, a friend from University that lives in Sydney, and went for drinks at the Sydney Opera House bar and a meal near the Rocks area. Prices for meals and drinks were expensive, not just compared to South East Asia but even too London. Drinks would cost about $8 (about 5.50) and meals would cost $25 (about 17). Not the 2 meals we were having in South East Asia.

Rather then swim in the Sydney South Pacific Ocean we decided the best way to see sharks was to visit the Sydney Aquarium. The next day the weather was nice so we walked to Darling Harbour on the west side of Sydney Harbour and visited the aquarium. Afterwards we took a ferry to Sydney Harbour which went under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and allowed us to stop off at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The clouds started to come in as we walked around the Sydney Opera House so we took shelter under the curved roof when it did start to rain. It only lasted about 30 minutes before we could continue. We met up with Rob and Dove that evening and had drinks at the revolving bar in the centre of town called the Orbit Bar. High up on the 47th floor the views of the sunset and the lights of all the skyscrapers flicking on was amazing to see. In the distance we could see the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge glowing brightly.

The following day Rob and Dove kindly took us for a walk along the beaches around Mosman and Manley, two suburbs on the north side of Sydney Harbour. The weather wasn’t the greatest but we could still see loads surfers catching the waves.

Later that afternoon we got ready to see a DJ, we both saw in Ibiza, at the ACER Arena next to the Sydney Olympic stadium. We arrived there at 9pm and entered the arena with 30,000 others and didn’t leave till 5am. We arrived back at our hostel at 7am after stopping off at McDonald's for breakfast. It was our first time we had had any fast food on the whole tour and regretted it straight away.

After sleeping till midday we managed to wake up and make our way to the Sydney Habour to catch a ferry to Wat sons Bay for a short walk. The scenery was beautiful. We stayed there that afternoon looking back at the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the sun reflecting over the water.

After getting pretty much no sleep the night before we got an early night ready for the Blue Mountains the next day. We caught the early morning train from Central Station and headed west for 2 hours before getting off at Katoomba. It was a perfectly clear day when we arrived and we could see why the mountains get the name. We spent most of the day trekking along the paths around the Blue Mountains national park. After walking for four hours, spotting an Aborigine on his didgeridoo, walking down the steepest steps in the world down to the canyon, and through the rain forests we headed back to Katoomba and to Sydney for the evening.

The next day we took the bus to Bondi Beach where we walked along the coast for 5km towards Coogee Beach. That evening we had a farewell meal with Rob at the Australian Hotel in the Rocks. Peppered Kangaroo Pizza!

After visiting Sydney over seven days, and spending three times our budget, it was time to leave and head to New Zealand on the early flight to Christchurch. We had a great time in Sydney and would love to both come back to visit the whole of this massive country again.

Jelikoz jsme byli unaveni z cele cesty, sli jsme rovnou do postele dospat nase brzke vstavani.

Zasli jsme do historicke casti the Rocks, odkud vede Harbour Bridge na severni breh.

Bohuzel ten den byl jeden z nejdestivejsich dni v roce a my jsme plaz videli pouze z auta. Coz znamenalo, ze cely den jsme byli opravdu unaveni a take nas lehce bolela hlava.

Kolem pate jsme si vzali vlak zpatky do Sydney a naveni jsme padli do postele.
