Leaving Glacier National Park, I headed down highway 89 (south) was next and it was actually the best part of my ride today - again, 70mph, and crazy twisty roads similar to Vancouver Island. My shoulders were aching by the end from throwing the bike back and forth through the endless ess-curves. I eventually hit the I-5 superslab going south and made up some time. The speed limit goes up to 75mph so you can safely do 130kph.

About 30 minutes before reaching Montana's capital of Helena, the I-5 gets interesting. You enter some canyon lands as the mountains rise above you and you follow the rivers and lakes of the low lands. What is neat is the road, still divided with great pavement and 130kph speeds, becomes super twisty. You get about 20 minutes of endless ess-curves at high speed - I've not seen anything like it anywhere else, it really got the heart going, especially passing the semi-trucks through the corners in the dark! Awesome.

The canyon lands brought something else along with the curves - millions upon millions of bugs! Within 5 minutes I could hardly see through my visor, the windshield was totally coated, and the headlight was noticeably dimmer from all of the carcasses coating it! And they weren't just little ones either - the ones hitting my legs really stung! I'm not sure if they only come out at night and if I had gone through earlier I may have been spared this rather biblical-like plague, but it was really gross. It will take some work tomorrow to clean the bike up - I'll take pictures before I do.

I wanted to get to at least Townsend tonight but the rains hit as I entered Helena so that signaled the en of my day. It was after 10pm anyway so I'll try to get an early start tomorrow.

Total mileage today - 847km
Total for trip - 7,941km
