Leaving Galcier National Park behind, highway 89 (south) was next and it was actually the best part of my ride today - again, 70mph, and crazy twisty roads similar to Vancouver Island. My shoulders were aching by the end from throwing the bike back and forth through the endless ess-curves. I eventually hit the I-5 superslab going south and made up some time. The speedlimit goes up to 75mph so you can safely do 130kph.

About 45 minutes before reaching Montana's capital city of Helena, the I-5 goes through some very cool canyon lands - the mountains rise around you and you travel through the lowlands following the rivers and lakes. What is cool is it is still a divided highway with great pavement and 130kph speeds, but it is one set of ess-curves after another for about 50km! I wish it had been daylight so I could have seen the surroundings, but running those corners in the dark was a blast - it really got the heart pumping. Especially passing semi-trucks on the curves!

The nasty part of the canyon land area was the bugs - millions of them!!  Within about 5 minutes I could barely see through my visor, the windshield was totally coated, and my headlight was noticably dimmer due to the carcasses covering it! I'm not sure if they only come out at night and I may have avoided this rather biblical-like plague during the day, but it was really gross. They weren't just little ones either - some of the ones hitting my legs really stung!

I wanted to press on towards Townsend but it started to rain when I got into Helena, and since it was after 10pm I saw no point to going on.

Total milage today - 847km
Total milage on this trip so far - 7943km
