From Swan Hill to Mildura with a trip out to Wentworth. Along the way, all you see are orange, mandarin, olive and almond groves with the odd grape vine dotted in between. Mildura was named after the red earth that is all around here. The aboriginal word for red is "mil" and their word for earth is "dura". We had lunch at the beach on the banks of the Murray. Then went and had a look at Rio Vista House, where W.B. Chaffey lived with his family. He and his brother brought irrigation to Mildura. Old Mildura House is at the site where the first cattle / sheep station set up. We watched the paddle steamer PS Melbourne go through lock 11. There are locks all along the Murray, designed to reduce the risk of flood and control river flow (good luck in the current drought)
We went out to Wentworth and saw the inland botanic garden which has a bush chapel and would be a lovely place when all in flower. Then we went to the Old Wentworth Goal. The goal was designed by the same architect that designed the Old Hay Goal, so this is why they look alike. We went down and saw where the Murray and the Darling Rivers merge. There are some very large river red gums on the banks.
