The sun returns Thursday for our last day and night in Pelion. A last ramble around the village of Afissos, a cocktail on the wharf, watching a small fishing boat return for the day, and dinner at a waterside eatery. It's so early in the season that most menus are relatively free of anything actually available. Tonight we are offered a prix fixe of Greek or potato salad and meatballs or macaroni. We order everything on the menu. Haven't been dazzled by the fare here which has been decisively trumped by the scenery and ambiance. Wines are usually homemade and served by the carafe and tend to be on the young and weak side.
A red sun sinks rapidly into the Aegean and we head back up Mt. Pilio before it's dark and those curves become any more surprising.
In the morning at 7, packed and ready to head back to Athens, the house is quiet and there are no signs of staff. Hate to forgo one last breakfast, but with 5-6 hours of driving ahead, we need to get on the road. I leave a note on the table and a tip in my room and begin the struggle with luggage back down the stone path to the main street below. We wind our way down the twisting road for the final time. After a quick stop in Volos for an egg and ham pastry and a cup of Greek coffee strong enough to bend steel, we thread our way through town and onto the National Road to Hamia and Athens.
Wiser and braver now from the trip here, the road back is a breeze and we make Athens in 5 hours without incident and drop off the rent-a-car. Bella shops the Duty Free while I wait at the gate. They announce a gate change. Boarding time arrives and no Bella. I have her paged and turn around to see her standing behind me.

Great to Catch Up with You
I thought you hadn't found your first cafe--but see now you've been traveling the old fashioned way--my subscribe status is funky. You have fully created the video of the thrills and chills of me driving through Turkey on the same Roman roads. Your prose and the scenery sound marvelous, although I have a few words to look up. I hope the wine gets better. Wish I was there. We're going to SAM tonight to say goodbye to the Romans that have been visiting here. Full circle through the centuries. Can't wait for tomorrow's epistle. KT xxoo
