A brief flight, and we are now settled into another fabulous hotel, now in Beijing. Their hotel star system is really pretty amazing. Government run, you can count on the stars meaning something. While the Dolton was rated (and clearly) 5-star, the Oriental Garden here in Beijing is 4-star. Still pretty nice! I think one of the features of the extra star could be the extent to which the staff speak English, which is not too prevalent here! We are quite a long way from any of the action, but taxis are common and cheap so we're doing just fine.

Sydney had her Embassy medical check on 1st day (Thursday 23 June) and all is good! Expect a visa by next Tuesday, and return home Friday.

Your Son is a High School Grad
Dear Peter, Susan & Syd: We are in the lounge in Vancouver, returning to Kelowna after a day in the sun (literally--I'm burned!) in Shawnigan. But what a treat, to be with Matt when he graduated. He's on top of the world--even though he has another exam to write. There I was, expecting decorum and grace from the well-heeled parents at this august institution--only to discover that it's dog eat dog when it comes to spots in the shade, and no quarter is cut. It was a lovely day, and Matt looked fab in his blazer and athletic tie; he is registering for UVic today, so the symmetry is about perfect--your three boys will be in University as you contemplate which pre-school will work for your daughter. Much love, and can't wait to see you, Katy
