Today we went on a bus and walking city tour of Lima. We drove past Huaca Pullcana, a clay brick solid pyramid built nearly 2000 years ago. The flat top was a religious area where sacrifices, usually females, took place. We drove past several prominent buildings of varying cultural styles. We visited the archaeological part of a museum that showed the beginnings of the different civilisations of South America from about 5000 years ago. We saw Inca metal work using gold/copper alloys. Precious metals were used by the Incas for spiritual and decoration purposes. Shells and stones were used for trade.
We visited the Plaza Mayor bordered by the Basilica Cathedral and San Francis of Assissi Monastery built in 1600s but rebuilt over the years due to earthquake destruction, The Presidential Palace and City Hall. We watched the changing of the guard at the palace where the palace guard band marches within the fences and plays tunes. Pretty good.
We looked inside the San Franciscan Church and the decorations were much more stylised than those we had seen in Europe. We visited the historical library in the Monastery which has books from 1651 to 1821 when Peru declared independence from Spain. We went into the catacombs under the Monestary which were burial grounds for the middle class. After the catacombs were closed in 1821 the bones were put into groups- skulls, femurs, etc so they could count how many were buried there.
We returned to the Hotel then wandered to some more markets then down the street finally getting dunch at 4:00. We walked down to the beach but you had to walk down a very steep cliff to get to the water and it is supposed to be cold-14 degrees C. Lots of surfers in water. Walked back to our hotel, pack up, 6:15 depart from hotel in morning.
