Mindo is a couple of hours outside of Quito and is described as a cloud forest - it's famous for its bird watching and waterfalls and is supposed to be a good place to chill out - a much needed rest after the Mojito-fueled 3 hour wait for the match the day before. We got a room at Casa de Cecilia and were very brave to deal with a shared bathroom for the first time. It did help that there only appeared to be one other guest. We set off to walk to the waterfalls. Being the weekend there were LOTS of Ecuadorian tourists, who all gave us pitying looks as they drove past in cars, leaving us to taste their dirt. It was a longer walk than we anticipated (uphill as it always seems to be). Eventually - after a couple of hours - one guy stopped and insisted on giving us a lift the rest of the way. Unfortunately he took us past the place we wanted to stop and dropped us much further away. Visited the waterfall at a place you could swim and jump in from a ridiculous height. P went in for a swim - it seems that he thinks that after swimming in glacier meltwater, nothing can stop him. But we gave the jump a miss, despite being egged on by the locals. The journey back down the hill turned out to be excitement enough. It was on the top of a truck and the excitement not only lay in trying to hold on whilst going over big potholes, but also avoiding being knocked unconscious by branches (I'm sure they aimed straight for them). We stopped half way down and one of the guys told us we had to get down and sit inside in case the police came... Apparently sitting on the top was 'exciting' enough to be illegal. Overall Mindo was a beautiful place, weather was good, and nice to have breakfast watching all the different hummingbirds. Didn't come across any significant wildlife, but what we did see was friendly...
